Healthy Travel Or What I Am Packing

It’s a short post today where you get a quick peak into my travel bag full of goodies. Having been a bit of a gypsy my whole life and living out of a suitcase for the past six months, in particular, I dare to say I have mastered the art of healthy travel. Well, the concept is evolving with every trip.

Before I share what I am packing this very minute let me tell you one thing: I pack for the journey not for the destination. What I mean is - gone are the days when I arrive at my friends’ house or at a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting with a suitcase half-packed with food. I used to have this fear that the experience would not be complete without my gluten-free bread, coconut cream, chocolate spirulina truffles and what else..!

Things have changed. I’ve noticed on more than one occasion that the gluten-free bread would stay untouched and spirulina truffles would look unappealing while I find myself sipping a perfect cappuccino on Amalfi coast. Or how can I not have that gorgeous sourdough bread in San Francisco? Beautiful rich farm cheese in Ukraine? That dense carrot-rye bread with goats cream cheese and some fresh cucumber in Norway? When I am in New York you bet I am having a bagel (or a half of it - they are humongous). You get the point.

Airports, however, are no man’s land. Apart from my little routine of having an americano and a chocolate-covered biscotti at San Francisco airport every year when I am waiting for my flight to London I don’t feel any “cultural foodie pull”. And this is where my healthy snacks come in handy. Not to mention how unappetising airplane food can be. Even in first class where you can have a decent meal I still find that having that notorious chocolate-spirulina truffle with my coffee is so much better than a sugary snack. Face it, most of us eat more calories in the air out of boredom while actually not moving at all. So I try to make it healthy.

What I am packing today is actually not my bestest. Normally, I would have more home-made foods: my almond-zucchini salt-and-pepper crackers, lemon-poppy seed muffins and evangelical energy balls. But it’s Christmas. It’s hectic and busy and time is of essence. So, I am packing a few health-shop-bought snack-y things. They are a bit high in almonds and dates and as you probably already know I am trying to keep those to a minimum. But they are still miles better than the “snack-y things” you find at the airport.

I lied a little bit. I do pack a few things for the destination. Such as my ProGreens powder - I mix it with sparkling water, a few squeezes of fresh lemon and a couple of drops of stevia - the closest I get to having a green smoothie while away. Coconut water works just fine. I also pack chia and ground omega 3 nuts and seeds to sprinkle on my oatmeal or a fruit salad for good fats. Those are essentials. I will write a separate post on all my healthy travel tips and tricks but today it’s what is going into my tote as we speak. Of course, there are also cut up slices of apples and carrots, a trusted water bottle with built-in charcoal filter (more on that later), a layered chia pot...

If you are travelling this week what are you packing? Would love for you to take a snapshot and share with me!
